Winchester 1890 question
My dad recently gave me my grandfather's old Winchester 1890 22 WRF and I was trying to compile a history of the gun out of sheer curiosity since it kinda is an artifact of my family.
So far it looks like the gun is decent condition, however someone did drop a bolt through the stock near the receiver. I haven't take that off because I don't what kind of damage it is meant to repair (its an old farm gun so who knows what happened).
The serial number is 508823 so I know the rifle was manufactured between 1911 and 1912. On the upper receiver there is an 'A' stamped under the serial number. Inside of the upper there is some stamping that I can't really make out. The best I can tell is that it is a 7 in a triangle, a C with a circle around it and the number 31 with a period/dot below it.
The markings on the barrel confirm with the age of the serial (1911), and the gun still fires.
While I have no intention of selling this rifle, I would love the know the approx. value and what that 'A' means.

Serial number 508801 was the last one through the Polishing Room on December 5th, 1912. Your rifle most likely went through the Polishing Room within a day or two of that date.
The "A" on the receiver identifies it as a Model 1890 versus a Model 1906 (which was stamped with a "B"). The receiver frames are otherwise identical between the two models.
The other markings you describe are inspection stamps that were applied during the assembly and fitting process.
In order to determine the value (estimate), you will need to post some clear pictures of the various parts of the rifle. I suspect that it will not have a significant value amount due to the condition of the stock and the bluing.0 -
