Browning Early Safari .243 Win
Back in the late 50's...early 60's Browning offered a "medium" Mauser action with lightweight "pencil" barrels in .243 Win. I believe the .308 was also offered in this shorter action. Shortly after...these calibers were produced with the Sako action. My question is: Does anyone know about how many rifles were made in the 243 with the short MAUSER action with 22" pencil barrels? THANKS!!!

the early browning actions were not "short" as you might imagine. they were based on the small ring mauser design. an example of a large ring mauser would be the 98, the small ring the 96 etc. 0 -
Thanks Cody45 for the proper description "small ring". I have read that these are also referred to "medium" mauser actions. I believe the term "short" might apply to the mauser action of a 222 etc...Anyway, I have one of these and wondered how many were made? In my 67 years, I have only seen a couple in 308 and 243. MOST of them from the early 60's are Sako actions including the 284 of which only about 160 were made. Thanks again! 0 -
Michibay, can't answer your question about the totals manufactured but agree that the number of 243s and 308s built on the small ring mauser action with the "pencil" barrel must be low. I have one in 308 with SN L577 which I think was made in 1959. In many years of visiting gun shows, gun shops, and other firearm venues I've seen very few of these. Nice rifles though; some of the finest production rifles ever made IMO. 0 -
