Great old thumbsmasher. I think it was made in 1911. 0 -
Had one for years until a family member gave it away. Great shotgun. Might want to have it checked out by a competent 'smith before shooting it, but assuming all's o.k., no reason not to use and enjoy. Don't know what you paid for it, but depending on condition, it may have considerable collectors value. Most I've seen are well worn but still good shooters.

We had an old worn out one in the family as a kid growing up. My dad said a hundred times that "you could put the shells in the basement and the model 1897 in the attic and it would still go off by itself within a week". That kind of talk directed us to an Ithaca model 37 for our shotgun needs. We always figured he had a bad experience with it. 0 -

It was manufactured in the latter part of the year 1909, and it should be an "E" series gun.
