cosmaline remover solvent

Hi Guys,
Can anyone tell me what is the best solvent to remove cosmaline
from a weapon?

    The best solvent I have found is Brakeclean. Hot water works well too.

    I wipe off all I can at room temperature with paper towels. Then I put the gun parts in a black trash bag in the sun for a couple hours and wipe off again, followed with spraying with WD-40 and wiping with cotton rags (T-shirts). Old oil stains on bolts and action parts giving it a yellow tint is easily cleaned off with rubbing alcohol. Finally I spray and wipe down with Rem-Oil.

    K1 kerosine and then hose it off with super hot water and blow dry with air or your hairdrier and then oil and wipe down

    Heat. It has a melting point just over 100*, 110* IIRC. Depending on what you are trying to remove it from I have heard of guys taking stuff to the car wash.

    Last time I cleaned stuff I used very hot tap water, a nylon scrub brush and some rags. Once done clean and lube like normal.

    Simple Green, undiluted, works great on cosmoline. Just dip an old toothbrush in it and scrub away.[:)]

    Excellent advices!

    When I bought my 2 SKSs, they were filled with gobs of cosmoline and wrapped for long storage. I took it to a machine shop that had a commercial ultrasonic cleaner degreaser. They ran it with a batch of the other items,IIRC, it cost me $10 a piece and it was done in less than half an hour.

    One of the local gunsmith I go to has to a a degreaser machine.

    Check out your local gunsmith or machine shops that might offer a similar service.

    Depends how bad it is.

    For really bad cosmo jobs I usually pack it in kitty litter and place in the hot sun (maybe in a hot car) for a day or two. Sucks it right out. If small enough- drop in boiling water. Melts it right off. Flash dries. Then lightly oil.

    Best one is whatever you have lying around that is safe.

    Cosmolene is just a petroleum-based goo.

    Lots of different things *CAN* take it off, including any organic solvent (including potentially unsafe ones like gasoline, kerosene, etc), brake cleaner (tetrachloroethylene), soapy water, ordinary boiling water, most common gun cleaners (though those aren't cheap in quantity), most common degreasing agents (simple green, etc).

    The stuff melts, so heat helps.

    Its been unseasonably cold in most of the country lately, but one trick is just to hang the thing outside covered with a black garbage bag in direct sunlight to get nice and hot, and the cosmoline will melt off/out.

    Also, depending on the gun in question, you may HAVE to disassemble it to get all the cosmolene out. Guns are literally immersed into it, and the stuff can fill up bolts, actions, gas tubes, etc.
