need some advise. 6.5x284 or 6mm br heavy berrals
i have a choice between a savage 6.5x284 12F Class Precision Target or savage 6mm br with KRIEGER BARREL BUILT BY DENNY TUBBS CHAMBERED IN 6BR LAPUA. i am going for 5oo to 1ooo yds. both are new a and are equipped with heavy berrals and 1-8 twist rates. both are bolt action style and are set up for bench. please share you thoughts and opinions. the 6.5x284 has 30" barrel and 6mm br has 26". both are at about the same price.

6.5x284 is better for someone inexperienced at long distance shooting. The 140gr 6.5mm pills with the velocity that round produces, will have less wind drift.
The 6BR is a superb round, but IMHO needs someone versed in benchrest to get all it has.0 -

The 6.5-284 has better ballistics by virtue it can shoot:
A. A higher BC bullet
B. A heavier bullet
C. Can shoot that heavier, higher BC bullet faster than most any 6mm high BC bullet. And there are some good ones. The lighter weight of the 6mm will tend to make it drift more in wind.
The drawback is if you shoot a lot of heavy competitions you will burn a barrel out faster in 6.5-284, than with a 6mm BR. Again though, that's only if you are shooting a lot. Most people don't get to the point they shoot barrels out. Most every competition guy has shot out at least one barrel if not a LOT more. On your Savage it won't be nearly as expensive to replace as on other rifles.
FWIW, I have a friend who shoots the 6.5-284 and he just got into 1000 yd. competition this past year or so. He's happy with his and he isn't even a quarter of the way through what he figures to be his wear point of changing the barrel.0 -

Most target shooters with high velocity calibers like 6.5x284 figure on changing barrels every year. Load data and "sweet spots" are well known so you don't have to expend barrel life searching for a good load. As I recall (I don't shoot one, just a .308 for F-T/R.) the "recipe" is a 139 gr Scenar, a 142 gr Sierra MK, or 140 gr VLD from Berger or JLK, along with a load of 4350 or 4831 for 2950 fps.
That is below the caliber's maximum velocity but it has been repeatedly described as the "sweet spot" for accuracy.0
