Winchester 94 weak main spring

I was out shooting a newly aquired pre 64 Winchester 94 this past week and couldn't help but notice how weak the hammer spring was compared to the other old Winchesters I was also shooting that day. The hammer was still hitting with enough force to detonate the primer, but it just wasn't as crisp and tight as the others.

My question is what is the best way to remedy it. On getting a replacement, is there a difference between the main spring on a pre vs. post 64 Winchester?? All of the listings on the auction side only had post 64 main springs and I don't know how interchangable they are. Or, am I better off taking out the old spring and trying to bend enough tension back into it to tighten it up??

I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

    yes there is a big difference between old (pre 64) and new. Please note the pre 64's have a hammer spring tension screw that may be backed out some (should be the second screw head in the lower tang starting from the back).

    Kevin...welcome to the forum. Have you checked the screw mike is talking about?

    Thanks guys. I did tighten the screw that Mike mentioned, and while I was at it I took the spring out and and bent a little more tension into it. Between the two it helped out considerably. I appreciate your help.

    by putting more tension on the main spring you also increased your trigger pull weight so you may want to test it also because it has to do with overall accuracy.

    I generally prefer a lighter trigger pull on a rifle, but before the adjustment it was almost too light. If I had to guess it was only about one pound. So increasing the trigger pull weight on this gun was probably a good thing. When I bent more tension into the spring I was extremely careful......I didn't dare do a whole lot. The last thing I wanted was to snap that spring in two. I think tightening up the spring tension screw as Mike indicated did as much as anything.
