Remington 799 in 222

I just received a Remington 799 in 222 and I cannot get the bolt inserted. I am 99% sure the firing pin is cocked so I am stuck. Anyone have any suggestions?

  The 799 is a Mauser action - yes? With the cocking nob level to the action, is the bolt handle up and to the right? Is the extractor in the correct position? At what point does it get stuck? Safety off?

  Firing pin should be cocked to insert bolt if it is a mauser style. Are you telling us that the cocking piece at the rear of the bolt is rotated out of position to go into the receiver?

  Thanks for the replies. I don't know what to call the piece of the bolt assembly which turns and has to be aligned with top piece, but it was not in perfect alignment and I turned it a tad, and in it went. Thanks again for your questions and desire to help.
