Colt Sauer Rifles
Over the years I have had many so called premium center fire,bolt action rifles including pre 64 Winchesters, 700 Remington's, anshultz's etc. The Colt Sauer rifles of 1974 to 1985 were by far the smoothest,best looking,and top notch shooters.My question is were they machined better ? hand lapped? and why was production for Colt stopped ? The used ones on auction sites are running at about twice original price so others must feel the same way I do.Any info?

Please tell me what you know about these rifles, as to over-all quality, fit, and finish. Is the price being asked on the auction side ($1,500 to $2,500+) reasonable. THX Keith 0 -
The Colt Sauer's were awesome rifles in their own right. They were not made by Colt. They were made by JP Sauer and Sons in Germany. I take it that the bean counters said they were not making enough for them to pocket more, and discontinued the product. Then the went on to the revolver's, then the AR rifles, then finally they closed down the custom shop, and so forth. That is what bean counters do. Discontinue products, untill you have no business or anything to produce, or turn around and have one product in 23 flavors, and call it 24 different products. 0 -
Agree that the Colt Sauer's are very nice rifles. However, IMO no nicer than the German Weatherbys which I think came from the same JP Sauer factory in the 60s and early 70s before the Colt Sauer production began. As to why they stopped making them? I think the high costs of labor, and the relative lower value of the dollar (therefore higher cost in the US) were the main problems. Essentially, we weren't willing to pay enough for them to allow the manufacturers to make a profit. At least not enough of us were willing to do it to justify continuing production. Same issue with Browning Superposed shotguns made in Belgium. You can still buy a new one but it will cost upwards of $5,000 TO $10,000 versus $1,500 to $2500 for a Japanese produced Citori. 0 -
In the mid 70's I was invited to hunt spring bear in Canada. Didn't have what I considered a good "bear gun" and stopped at a local shop to look over the selection. They had some Remingtons and a Colt Sauer. The Sauer was about $50 more than the Remington I bought. Kicked myself for 20 years and finally found a Sauer in 7mm Mag. that I could afford. 0 -

If I am not mistaken I beleave they (somebody) made Colts here in the USA for awhile. I am not sure who but I seen one and the quality was not the same as the ones produced in Germany.

yes I did, boar about #325, of course it was over bait and after the kill I thought we would celebrate, the outfitter had 1/2 case of LaBatts Blue and no cooler. Skinned the bear out left my clothes with the other guys and headed to the border with the head and hide in my cooler. Made a nice rug but has spent the last 7 years folded up in the hall closet. 0
