    take the but plate off there should be the serial number of the gun stamped in the wood. and yes its probbily been restocked.

    Does the forend have a serial number stamped in it? If it doesn't then it could be there might not be one under the butt plate either. This could be a nononsense question...he will know for sure.

    The 99E wasn't introduced until 1960. The 99EG was very similar and was produced from 1935-1960. From 1935-1940 it had no checkering. Starting in 1940 checkering was added to both the pistol grip and the forend. It might have had one of the famous 99 hairline cracks in the wrist and been replaced with a pre checkering stock on a 1940 rifle. As recommended, the serial number should be found under the buttplate. If it matches the rifle and forend both, maybe they mixed them as they used up old inventory in that transition year. Just a thought.
