Colt Detective Special 1957

I found an absolutely perfect condition Detective Special the other day and am thinking about making the purchase. According to the gentleman who owns it, it was manufactured in 1957, it is in nickle with perfect condition wood grips. The only thing lacking to make this pistol 100% is the box & paperwork.

What would be an honest value of this revolver? I think the owners price is a bit too high at $700.00. I may be able to get him down to 625 - 650....who knows. I want the revolver, but think the price is a bit out of reach. I've looked a bit on the "Smart Search" side, but haven't found this exact era with nickel in this condition, so I don't have a recent sold cost to compair.

    A bit of apples to oranges, but I have a same era Cobra in the same condition with the box and paperwork - including warranty card and the intact "Join the NRA" mailer. Not nickel though. I did pay quite a bit less, but that was a few years ago. If the gun is overpriced by $50.00 to $75.00 I would only ask "next year at this time which will you miss more - the gun or the $$$?" That's usually how I resolve it, may not be the best way to get a deal but unless the price is very much out of line I end up buying.

    A 53 year old gun in that shape? Buy it.

    The nickel will command a premium...if in fact it is factory nickel. If it is in that kind of condition, then the price is good. If you really want it, don't haggle to much, as some other vulture will land on it.
