Win. 69A Questions
I purchased a Win. 69A at an auction. I have some questions. First, the rear sight dovetail is filled with a blank. There is a Lyman 57E receiver sight; could the Lyman 57E be original? There is a front only sling swivel, could this be original? Last, the bottom of the pistol grip is stamped "W2996". The "W" looks like the Winchester W. Could this be a factory mark? The rifle is Very nice, metal is 98% and the wood is excellent but for a few impressions on the sides from being is some sort of clamp. Thank you in advance for your time.

I am without most of my Winchester catalogs that cover the 1938 - 1958 time period (they are on loan to a friend of mine). In the few remaining catalogs I have on hand, the Lyman 57E is not listed as an optional rear sight, but that does not mean that it could not have been special ordered.
I have not ever seen the stamped marking "W2996" until today, and it is a total mystery to me.
Having just one swivel does not appear to be "factory" to me.0 -
From what we can see, that looks like a nice little rifle. The Lyman 57e sight, I know for sure, was used on the m75 target rifle. I believe I have seen that sight on a few m69a's which I think were used as target rifles but I'm not sure. The barrels on 69a's,judging from mine which are equipped with the Winchester peep sight, do not have a rear sight dovetail in the barrel. The stamp in the bottom of the pistol grip probably is a rack, or club inventory number used to identify the rifle since the 69a's don't carry serial numbers.

the lyman reciever sight model 57E was probably added and the dovetail sight removed, the 57E is the correct reciever sight for the 69A round reciever. 0 -

Bert, you really miss those catalogs I bet. A person on another forum suggests that the 1961 catalog has a 69A called a "Junior Target Shooter's Special" that comes with front only sling swivel. The Lyman 57EW was the standard for that rifle. The Lyman 57E was made for the round barrel 69A as stated, and it could have been a factory option. Although the stamping looks "factory" confirmation will be difficult.0 -
The rifle looks to be in incredibly good condition. The note about the Junior Target Shooter's Special having a front sling swivel only is really interesting, and considering that a lower sling swivel is not necessary to any position of target shooting it makes sense. The letter and number stamping on the wood might be a serial number for this type of special rifle. It would be nice to see more pictures of your rifle, especially the slot blank and the front sight.
EDIT: That is one fine looking rifle. Thank you for the extra pictures. Everything looks like factory to me, hopefully, Bert and some other folks will weigh in with more comments since you have made known the "61 catalog" notes.
The front sight looks to be a target sight too. If we can't find out more about it by tomorrow, then I will crack open a box I have stored and pull out a couple of reference books and share what I find out with you and other interested parties. What a beauty you have there! [:)][^]
EDIT - For merrbarb and other interested members: The stamping on the wood is almost assuredly a Winchester Serial Number...check out the auction on this Winchester Model 67, and a like stamping in the same location:

OleDuk doesn't know how the devil I got back to an old post on a similar subject that is 2 years old almost. But those who are interested, take a look at ochoco's post on 04/18/2008 @ 2:39:53. I posted info on 4 M69A's i have access to and they're all different.
If I was a cut-and-paster I'd do that but I'm still a computer dummy and didn't see how to do it prezactly.

It is hard for me to imagine with the several very knowledgeable Winchester experts/afficionatos out there that some one hasn't seen this stamping before. I say this with increasing credibility that this stamping is factory, in seeing the Model 67 that you referenced. Theory 1: a Winchester inventory number for some purpose, maybe salemen?? Theory 2: refer to Theory 1 (I have no clue, but maybe I should contact the Cody curator if this is possible? ).
Actually if we can find out more about this type of stamping, it just adds to the pool of information on these wonderful firearms.0
