Forget about Moscow as the Russian rifles are nothing special. You either want a Bulgarian:

I will agree with Mark, to an extent, but the Chinese made Poly Tech Legend's rule the roost. For the best stateside built ones, go to Arsenal USA. I would always favor the Milled reciever's over the stamped. If you can find an SLR 95, they are nice too, if you can live with the thumbhole stock. The one I had was very accurate.

Take a look at the Finnish VALMET series - of course they are priced higher than the rest, but from the few that I've examined - they show just about the best workmanship, even better than the several Arsenals I've had a chance to work with. 0 -
What about a Maadi? They are Egyptian made and were at one time considered made as close to the original Russian as could found. My Maadi is great. 0 -

As stated before, there is nothing superrior, or great about the Russian's, and the Maadiis no exception. In fact the Maadi's are on about the same playing field as the Romanian's. The best stamped reciever AK, came from Yugoslavia, and the best milled reciever came from China(Poly Tech Legend), and the Bulgarian is a close second(no offense Mark). If you ever get your hands on either, you would know.

The man asked for the best and while I have Maadi rifles of my own and like them, they are a long way from being the best and some of the ones that came in from Century Arms were among the very worst! The Valmets and Galils are both outstanding, and while both use the Kalashnikov action, I don't consider them to be true AKs. In my never to be humble opinion you are looking at four rifles: The Yugos, the Bulgarians, the Hungarians and the Polytech Legends, which I quite foolishly neglected to mention in my first post. You will need to narrow the field by making a choice between the milled or the stamped receivers. If you are going for the milled then the Polytech is the better choice, that is if you can find one! These rifles are very rare and command huge premiums so if you pockets are not deep then the Bulgarian might be the better option. If you decide on a stamped receiver then the Yugo is the way to go, if you can get a real one made by Zastava and not a parts gun built up on a USA made receiver. If it comes down to that then you are better off with the Hungarian.
So many choices!

If you really want a milled rifle and do not want to pay so much for a Polytech Legend, how about a Chinese MAK 90 milled rifle and buy a stock set from Iron Woods Design. Aren't these MAK 90's virtually the same as the Legend series other than bayonet, stock color, position of sling on the receiver and muzzle nut? You can add enough USA parts (fire control group, flash hider, mag with the before mentioned stock set) to make it 922r legal and have a lot of money left over for ammo. 0 -

That would be a swell choice, or you could go to Arsenal USA, and buy one the way you want it. In fact, there is most likely several on the auction side. If you want to go stamped, don't overlook the VEPR's. They are actually Russian made, if memory serves me correctly, and they are made on the RPK reciever.
