Winchester Model 21 Trap 6

Hello all & thank you for letting me join this forum. I have a Winchester Model 21 Trap with Grade 6 engraving & gold birds. Barrels are Full/Modified. I called the Cody Wyoming museum & was told that the gun left the factory as a standard Trap 21. I don't know if the gun was sent back to the factory for the engraving so I am asking your opinions here.

Gun is 98%+ & has been not been used very much at all. In fact, the gun has been sitting in a closet for 30 years as it was inherited. The gun dates around the 1948 area.

I will be selling the gun so I would like to have an expert's (hopefully Pauline as I have read many of her post's) opinion of what I have here. Engraving, is the wood correct & price I should ask.

    It does not appear to be factory engraving to me... Pauline will know for sure.

    I will let Pauline comment on the engraving, but the wood is only average grade for the over abundance of engraving and the vent rib and the recoil pad are both aftermarket.

    Also, Winchester would have had much fancier checkering pattern on such an ornate gun. My bet is that there is nothing factory about that gun.

    Oh, and Winchester timed (or indexed) all of the screw heads at the factory to be parralel with the gun. The model 21 is the only Winchester to have this unique option and I noticed some of the screws are out of time. Looks like a professional engraving job though.

    Here is 2 model 21's for comparison one with a vent rib and one without. First notice the wood that was put on there top of the line guns (and those are not even the engraved ones).

    This is how the vent rib on a 21 looks from the factory, notice the reciever is raised up where it meets the rib on the barrels. This raised part of the reciever was only done on vent rib guns and was given a matte fisnish from the factory to prevent glare. Notice how your guns vent rib dips down right before it gets to the reicever to allow it to be flush.

    Your M21 is not done by anyone in the factory. It is very loosely based on the No.6 pattern. I say loosely because alot of things are not done correctly for this pattern. The oak leaves are laid out wrong, the cocking lever screw does not appear to be engraved, the scroll work done on the frame around the cocking lever screw is No. 5 scroll work not no. 6. In general the scrollwork is done incorrectly but laid out the same as a no. 6. The engraving from what I can see is nice, just not factory.

    Thank's to all who replied. Especially you Pauline & cartod.

    I knew when I got it that the wood just didn't match the engraving. Now that I know it started life as a Non-Engraved Trap model....it makes sense. I did know that the pad was replaced but the wood did not appear to have been cut.

    I was just sure (as were 2 other collectors that have locally inspected the gun) that this was a factory engraving. Now, I am sure it is not. I am glad that it was commented that the engraving was nice.

    Last question not answered.........any idea of what I can expect to sell the gun for? Don't worry, I won't be offended.

    I think that if you did a no reserve auction it would bring $4000-$7000, and I left myself plenty of room for error. This is really a guessing game but that is a very nice 12ga., its just not factory. In an up market that thing could go over 10k.

    If you could identify the engraver maybe more.
