Mauser 220 HB vs H&R 243 HB
which of these two guns would be a better gun. i plan on just using one of these guns for varmit use. maybe 5ooyds tops.

Assuming you are asking about the 220swift and the .243win cartridges, well both should handle 500yds just fine. The 243 should handle wind and lager varmints better then the 220. But the 243 will also be more expensive to shoot. The H&R single shot rifles seem to have a pretty good following these days but I've never shot one. I do have lots of experience with sporterized and custom Mauser 98s. Uunfortunetely they can vary wildly depending on who made them and with what quality of components. Assuming that you are asking about a custom Mauser 98 in 220swift and that the asking price is on par with a new H&R 243 HB; then I would be worried. A reasonable quality custom Mauser should be a least twice the price of the H&R if not five time that price. More info please.... 0 -
yes the Mauser is much higher in price. Original 98 Mauser Action, 28" Custom Barrel. The heavy barrel and action are Glass Bedded. i dont know much at all about the Mauser 220 swift. i like a good 243. it is a heavy barrel also. 0 -
One thing you have to be observant of on a used 220 Swift, is the throat errosion. If it has been abused, then most likely the first 4-5 inches of the throat is non existant. Most people who have a rifle like this hold on to them if they are good shooter's, and sell them off when the accuracy drops off. I would want to try it before I buy it. Most likely it will favor bullets under 55 grains in weight.
On the other hand, I have a Ruger 77 MK II in 243 that loves a good hot loaded 55 grain Nosler BT. But it does not see a steady diet of them. I have clocked the loads I use at over 4100 fps.

Something of an issue with both these rounds is barrel erosion. Normally loaded .243 is somewhat mundane according to it's capabilities. However, many reloaders have figured out this thing will zing light bullets at near hyper-velocity just like the .220 Swift. Both rounds are known for burning out barrels quickly when that is done. Both rounds are also known for giving excellent service for years when loaded at more reasonable levels. Contrary to to popular belief about the Swift.
I personally would prefer the Mauser action to the H&R break action. But it really depends on which one you find more accurate. If the Mauser action has the barrel shot out and won't group but the H&R Swift will, and you like to shoot it, then you have your decision made for you.
One thing you will find is that no matter where you go you will probably find .243 ammo on the shelf. Even if you reload, there may come a time when something isn't working for you and you need to buy rounds at a store. There is a less than 50% chance you will find .220 Swift on any mom&pop store shelf. Let alone a big sporting goods store.0 -
