my neighbor stopped by today and gave me a top break 38 s&w 5 shot revolver. It has the pearl handle stocks and what seems to be a grip safety. The finish, nickel I presume is tarnished in spots bore is good.It has a 3and 1/4 in barrel. Can't find a model number.Serial # appears to be 197197. Can't post pics at the moment...anyone give me some info.

There aremany better calibers out there. The .38 S&W is pretty puny.

Joe, The .38 S&W round is somewhat underpowered when compared to .38 spl. Most companies dont make guns in that caliber anymore. The ammo is expensive and sometimes hard to find.

If the lady in question can shoot a .38 spl it would be a better choice. There are loads of revolvers available in that caliber.

Lack of good self defense ammo, lead round nose is rated at about 152 ft lbs- rather light IMHO. Teddy Roosevelt was shot with one- went thru a thick folded speech, hit his glasses case, cracked a rib. President McKinley was killed with one- he died 90 days after being shot. You could do better for a defense weapon. While the Brits used it as a military handgun, THEIRS was loaded with a 200 gr bullet.

Get her something in 38 special. There a bunch of small revolvers out there. Take her to a gun shop or show and let her handle some.
