Another Viet Cong SKS

I bought an SKS from a Vet who brought it back from Nam. Unfortunately, he no longer had the bringback papers (a shame), but it's legit. It's no longer safe to shoot as it has a crack in the reciever. What do you suppose caused that?

    Didn't we drop off a bunch of overcharged ammo on them back then? Wonder if that would have done it.

    Please post quality photos if you can. Never have run across a SKS with a cracked receiver. They always impressed me as being over engineered for the round they fired, i.e. hell for stout.

    Of course if their was a obstruction in the barrel when it was fired, all bets would be off.

    There is also a rare Chinese made variation made with a stamped receiver, that they dropped really quickly.

    I have had no luck posting photos, but I can tell you that it is Chinese #666733 and it is cracked right in front of the ejector port where the barrel fits into the reciever. Other than that, it is in well-used, but o.k. shape. I too, thought these things were tougher than that.

    Your comment rang a bell I heard many, many moons ago from someone in the know. So, you may just be onto something, though good luck in finding proof of your SKS reciever was indeedy dammaged by war time super-charged ammo?
    Just now googled "U.S sabotaged V.C ammo" and came up with "Project Eldest Son" on this website-- http://www.jcs-group.com/military/war1964/project.html -- and many others.
    Interesting read.

    That was an interesting read for sure. I had heard that it had been done, but did not know to what extent. I don't know if my SKS was a victim of this as the reciever is cracked, but the gun did not explode. At the very least, it is an interesting souvenier and is just as it was taken off the battlefield. Thank you for that info.

    I was "in country" in 1969 with the 9th Inf Div - I remember well the memos circulated about not firing captured enemy weapons. Never did see an exploded one - but there were many rumors circulating among the line units.
