What Kind of SKS Do I Have?
I came across a SKS this weekend for a price I just couldn't refuse. It has had the bayonet removed and I was wanting to replace it. Problem is, I really don't know what kind of SKS it is. The one sure thing I can state is that the hand guard above the gas tube is metal instead of the wooden ones I see in every picture I look at. I have no picture (but can put one up later, doe anyone have a clue how I can tell for sure what it is?

Does the metal hand guard have dozens of small holes in it? If so then it sounds like one of the aftermarket items sold by TAPCO and several others. We can't tell you much without seeing photos of the rifle and hopefully of it's markings. 0 -

Now I feel like a goober because I found Chinese markings on the rifle. Fortunately I do know a decent history of the rifle. A close friend of mine bought it from a gun dealer in Houston, who is unfortunately now out of business, a little over 10 years ago. 
Next question is, which bayonet should I look for and roughly what is the rifle worth?
With that said, because there is a picatinny rail system attache to the top of the receiver, does this rifle fall under the specifications that require 10 US parts?0 -
It is Chinese and it would have used the under folding spike (pig sticker) bayonet, excepting that the entire bayonet mounting attachment point has been ground off. You'd need to find and install a complete bayonet mount under the barrel to allow for the use of a bayonet again. [img][/img]

The scope mount is integral to the cover, not the receiver. As long as you resist the urge to convert it to a "so called assault rifle", you do not need to change any parts.
I would think it would sell for around $200, assuming the bore is good.

EDIT EDIT EDIT: Take a look at the front of your barrel; can you figure out how you are going to remove the front sight so that you can put on a new bayonet stud? I sure can't figure it out. I suspect a trip to a gunsmith would be needed; I also suspect that you won't find the part. Replace the handguard if you want, replace the receiver cover, but don't worry about the bayonet.0 -

Thanks all, I would prefer to have it in the original form provided I can find a bayonet for it. In the picture below, there appears to be no filing but the mount does not look like the one pictured above - does this hardware come with a bayonet and if I get one from here, what should i be looking for?

Sorry for the bother again but, I am really not a fan of the metal hand guard, should I find a new wood stock or just leave it as is for effect?
Also, none of the numbers match - does this point towards an "original" SKS assembled from parts or a Norinco thing to make it look for original?0 -
There was a law passed in 89 that said that the Chinese SKS could not be imported with a bayonetFrom when the law was passed by big Bush intil the time slick Willie passed the import laws in 94 they came without them. [Chinese is the only SKS ] 0
