220 Swift...Twist rate

Any of you 220 Swift shooters care to recommend a rate of twist. Only going to shoot one bullet, Sierra 53 grain match.

    1-14" is typical for factory rifles, and will handle a 53g bullet. Given a choice, I would opt for a 1-12" for a little extra versatility.

    Ive been shooting the 220 for many years. I also happen to like the 53 gr hp. Theres no reason to even think you can outguess the folks who came up with the 14" twist as being the best choice. After all a ground squirrel doesnt know the difference.

    I have been shooting the 220 since the late sixties and have several barrels to suit the latest rifle. If I am shooting the Speer 40gr 223hornet projectile I use a 1:14 barrel, because the 1:11 will keyhole the target every time, very unstable. The 1:12 barrel which was the origonal one fitted years ago is one of the very early stainless ones and stabilises 50gr Hornady PSP and most 55Gr projectiles very well. I have only fired a few 60-65gr target boat tail projectiles in all three barrels and I would think that if I had to make a choice on accuracy with these heavier ones the 1:12 is possibly best. I have many friends who shoot custom made 22 calibre cartridges and many of them are now opting for tighter twist rates with surplus 62gr projectiles with reasonably good results but none of them are pushing them anywhere near the speed of the swift and I think that this is where differences can be noticed. If you are spending good money on a special barrel for 50-55gr bullets I would definitely consider the 1:12 because you will cover all of the bullets (except extra heavy ones) with good or better results. Don't forget to run the barrel in properly first!

    help me out here folks, it's a .224 size bullet, same as the .223 Rem and 5.56mm NATO that has a twist rate of 1-7, 1-8, 1-9, and 1-12, most AR-15/M4 shooters prefer the 1/7 twist and the bullet stabilizes very well, so why couldn't the .220 Swift handle the above twist rates [?] [?] [?]

    because the advertisement of it's speed comes from a 50gr pill, and only needs a 14 twist.

    If I was gonna build it,..I would say 1:12 or 1:10, unless you want to get into heavy, high BC pills for long range work, then 1:8 would be my choice or even 1:7 or 1:6.5 for the 80gr pills

    Just for fun I would go a 1-8" twist so I could shoot 90 gr. pills out of a full length mag with that rifle.[:D][}:)][:D]
