Ruger International Accuracy
Ive never done much high power rifle shooting, but Im looking at doing it. I understand the free floating barrel concept for accuracy, but what about a full length stock. Would that be the least accurate? Im looking at the .308 round, and wonder if the Manlicher stock would effect accuracy out to say about 300 yards which is what I will practice out to. What would be the maximum range this gun would be practical for for most North American big game.

No easy answer as every rifle, regardless of stock style, is a law unto itself. On average the Mannlichers are apt to be more problematic. If you want a "buy and shoot" I'd say get the standard rifle. If the full length stock really appeals to you, get it and figure you may have to work a bit more on the bedding. 300 yards should be no problem for deer out your 300 yards but if by "most N.A. big game" you include bear, moose, mountain sheep and elk, I'd go for something with a bit more punch. The .308 will work at that range, but your ability to deliver a premium bullet under field conditions becomes ever more critical with each increase in range. Just my 2 cents.
FWIW, I had an Ultra Light 77 in .243 that shot all weights of bullets far more accurately than I ever thought that whippy thin barrel should be able to do.0 -
I have made a couple of full length stocked rifles in the past and have helped a friend improve one of his vintage Manlicher rifle's accuracy with some light bedding changes. My conclusion is that, as has been stated, they are individuals and have to be treated that way. The basic issue is that this class of rifle is often stocked with fine walnut with a slender forestock and a short minamal contour barrel. Barrel heating and slight wood warpage can throw things off. The Ruger's look to be stouter then ohter full length stocked rifles and may or maynot be as picky. But, 300yds isn't all that far and even a 6"@300yds, group should be minute of deer sized game, so go for it. By the way have you looked at the FLS Sako's? 0 -
Thanks for the help. The International just caught my eye, but for as much rifle hunting as Ill do, I might rethink it. 0
