Introduction to Gunsmithing

I'm not a noob to firearms or their routine maintenance, but I know next to nothing about gunsmithing. Is there anyway to get into the basics of it on my own? Is there any books or instructional material anyone can recommend? Thanks

    Gunsmithing not as a profession but for your own purposes involves a bit of a machinist, a jeweler , cabinet maker and all the tools involved.
    There are books on the past practices and tips of the trade.

    Check with Brownells They have books that will help but Experience is the best teacher a good mechanical aptitude will go a long way.

    Absolutely.

    Hundreds as a matter of fact. This first link if for the Jerry Kuhnhausen series of 'bench references' or manuals if you like. Not every little detail is 100% but the vast majority is pretty good.

    Amazon has a good selection of the pulp paper bound reference books. Many of these are the 'dis-assembly/assembly' books which can be invaluable as you get started:

    As suggested, Brownells has a good selection worth looking at and available online. Besides the books, they have online video tutorials and short explanations about specific processes;

    Take a look at http://gunsmiths.com/ -- a Brownells website. Click on Gunsmithing Help and then Articles. There is an article entitled "Getting started in gunsmithing". There are a variety of 'how I did it' articles by persons who have been there and done that.

    The listing of articles changes each time you access it. So if you don't find something, try 'search' or log out and come back again.
