Hi. What, if any are the differences in the cylinder locking bolt between the second and third generation colt SAA? Thanks.

Hello,
I just had a few questions about a Colt SAA first generation that I have had locked away for quite a few years. The gun was my father in laws, he passed away many years ago. I finally got around to looking into the gun and possible selling it. First I contacted Colt and obtained all the information via there archive service that I could. The serial # for the gun is 102863. The information that we obtained from Colt states the gun had a 7 1/2 inch barrel with a blue finish, .45 caliber. The gun in it's current state has a nickel finish and a 4/3/4 inch barrel. Obviously the gun has been reworked. How does this affect the value and is there anyway to identify who did the work and when? Any information would be appreciated. I attached a couple of pictures also. Thanks for all the help.

First generation Colt SAA's (and all civilian firearms) came to a dead-stop at the onset of WWII.
Second generation Colt SAA's started in the mid '50's, and the earliest of these [2nd gen] used first generation small parts, barrels, and cylinders until the parts bins at Colt were exhausted. No record of when the final 1st gen part was placed in a 2nd gen. gun. Hope I helped. Joe0 -
The only exception to what Joe has mentioned about 1st Generation guns is Colt did assemble about 300 Single Actions from remaining prewar frames that were number up to about serial number 357,869; starting in about October 1947 through early 1948. These became termed the Prewar/Postwar Single Actions. Additional assembly of these Pre/Post Single Actions also occurred in February 1951 and February 1952. Interestingly, these Pre/Post Single Actions have recorded ship dates of 1948, 1949, 1955, 1958, 1965, 1966, and a shocking 1972 when the last 27 of these were shipped (according to "A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver"). 0 -
