Winchester 1895 saddle ring questions
I thought I read once that these rifles (modern manufacture in 30-06) could be loaded through the use of stripper clips, is this true?
Also, were these rifles typically reliable and accurate? I held one at the store the other day and fell in love, but I am bit ignorant on their history.

I am not an authority on the 1895 but I do have one in 30-06 that has been passed down from my Grandfather to my father to me. My dad loved it and shot alot of deer and several black bears with it. The last time I hunted with it I was a teenager in the 60's (yes the nineteen 60's). It was a beast to carry through the woodland swamps of wisconsin and I quickly switched back to my model 94 after the first day.The fixed magazine forward of the trigger made it impossible to hold with one hand as that is the only place it is balanced. It was/is accurate and has an illustrious history both as a sporting rifle and a military rifle. It is famous for being Teddy Roosevelt's favorite in 405 caliber. The Russian Govt. purchased almost 300,000 1895 Winchester muskets in 1914. These rifles had charger guide ribs attached to the receiver to enable use of the standard Russian charger clips. I don't know about this adaptation for other 95's. 0 -
Thank you for the detailed review. I didn't notice the weight and balance issue in my brief examination, but that doesn't say much since I wasn't really looking.
I had heard about the musket versions before, but had never heard of any sporting model having the clip guides either...0
