Don't know much about it but I'd be interested in any advice those of you who do might have. One thing I'm curious about is - is the winter fishing better early in the season or later.

Sorry to hear you lost a fisherman. It does happen, and all too often if you ask me. Personally I have been through the ice 3 times. Once only 2 feet of water, once way over my head and went all the way over my head. The other time the water was deep, but I managed to hold onto something and one hand stayed dry.
These where all in my younger years. Since that time I have become much more aware of ice conditions, and more careful while on the ice. The only problem I have had recently was falling on the ice. Last year I hit my head pretty hard. A good pair of ice cleats solved that issue.
To anyone on the ice... Be careful. It is a lot of fun, but can be dangerous.

Sorry you lost a close one. We lost one here that was 66 yo, been ice fishin since he was 5 yo.

Our ice season is closing fast usually we are just getting the top slush tightened up to where we can travel wherever we want right up until sometimes 1-May, but I think if weather patterns stay the same, people may be fishing Jackson lake from a boat by then.

I am going to start another thread, but have a look at the videos
