ruger 77 recrown question
Is it possible to recrown a ruger 77 which has the ruger open sights without removing the front sight? Thanks.

If you want to do a home job on it, weld a steel ball bearing (of the appropriate diameter-slightly larger than the bore) to a sturdy rod/dowel of metal. Using automotive valve grinding compound, light pressure, and concentric motion; you will have a new crown in about an hour or less if you don't use a drill. If you're careful, it will even be a slight improvement over factory. Just don't chuck something into a drill and go nuts on it because you only want to remove the old crown enough to call it a new one. 0 -
No offense but this can also be a recipe for pure disaster. The crown is the last part of the rifle to touch the bullet upon exiting from the barrel. If it is NOT exactly perpendicular and parallel you will be absolutely sure to lose accuracy. This is not the place to exhibit your skills at cobbling on a rifle.
Unless you have the skill and knowledge to handle this type of job, take it to a gunsmith for the crown.
