New to Gunbroker

So i am new to gun broker, and i am looking at a couple of guns here. I have a couple of questions that maybe someone can answer. The auctions that i am looking for take credit cards, checks, and money orders, but in order to get the discount i have to use money order or check. i am a little worried about using these two methods because money orders have no protection that i know of he he never sends the purchase. Then if i use a check i could be out of the money until my bank resolves the issue. The gun i am looking at buying is a p226 and is ranging from 800 to 900, so if i end up not getting the gun i could be out 400 to 500. I am sticking to the Featured section and also A or better sellers but is there anything else that i can do to protect myself. Thanks in advance

If you deal with only reputable folks with good long term credit you should be OK. I have never been burnt in the 5 years I have been using the auction. Make sure you ask all questions before you bid, and if you are overly paranoid you could ask for an ffl to ffl exchange (of course you will have to pay for both)

You have to send a FFL as well as payment, so just use a USPS MO, send it with your FFL info. Should something happen (don't think it would) the postmaster can get involved.

Be sure to read the FOR BUYERS tutorial, especially the IS IT SAFE? section.

Like Cartod says, you have to look closely at any auction before you bid. My personal "red flags" that keep me from bidding are:
    --"reserve auction"
    --poor photos
    --poor description
--seller unable to send me additional photos upon request
    --short selling history
    --multiple bad feedback
--seller does not give minimum 3 day return
--seller will not refund shipping both ways if item is not as described

After winning an auction, verify the sellers address & phone number before sending payment.

If you are uneasy sending a check or MO, 3% penalty is cheap enough insurance. The seller has to pay that to the credit card company; it seems fair for the buyer to pay for that protection.

I agree with iwannausername. Use a USPS money order. I have bought and sold on Gunbroker and request USPS money orders when selling. I believe that fraud involving a USPS money order is a Federal offense. Deal with reputable people according to their feedback and you should have no problems. If buying a large ticket item such as a gun, ask about a return policy BEFORE you bid. AS-IS on large ticket items scares me. A good reputable person should have some sort of return policy. Often it is listed as "not specified", so you need to ask. I don't think you need to stay in the featured section. That does not guarantee anything about the seller. You pay extra to place your item in that section.

BTW, great choice on the P226. I own one and love it.

Rip offs are VERY rare when dealing with established vendors on the auction side. You can send payment with confidence, knowing GB will back you up.

    Welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!

Even if you buy a gun for $900 the 3% discount is only $27, not that much savings. If they would take a credit card, go ahead and use it, if not postal MO. If you deal with the sellers with good feedback you should have no problems.
