New York State Firearm Laws?

Am I to understand that any semiautomatic firearm with a magazine capacity over 10 rounds is illegal in NY unless it was manufactured before 1994?
I presume that most other firearms are legal however?
What are the steps to a CWL in NY and is it the only license one would need and how long of a wait and hassle if any would a person be looking at?

    Any semi-automatic firearm that has a detachable magazine, and does not have more than two banned features (threaded muzzle, pistol grip, collapsable stock, bayonet lug) Is Okay to purchase/posess in NY. To have the banned features, it has to have been manufactured prior to the AWB. Same for magazines. Prior to the ban, magazines with greater than ten round capacity is Okay to purchase/posess.

    Time varies by county. Average is 4-6mo. Secure the application forms from the county Sheriff's office where you live. You must have been a resident of said county for a minimum of two years.

    You'll also need a character statement by three individuals that have resided for at least two years in the same county as you are applying for the CWL, need to pass a check on medical competency (commitment to institution, etc), need to show proof of firearms safety course completion, and need to be photo'd/finger printed.

    Then you wait for the FBI check to complete. Then you go before the county magistrate for final approval. In my county, once issued, the pistol permit is permanent. No expiration. I believe that is the same for the other NY counties, as well (except the five counties of New York City and Westchester).

    So 2 year wait for county residence, 4-6 month wait for application, then fbi check, then magistrate approval, Geez! is that all, probably die of old age first...apparently the draconians haven't read the Constitution.

    Anyway what are the best major counties to deal with?

    So the license if and when a person obtains it should be permanent, hmm interesting; does it cover every other firearm purchase as well or is there still a waiting period or can I just purchase it and leave with it?

    Is it true that once I find an ffl dealer and select a firearm that upon purchasing it I have to take it to the police so that they can register it?

    Is there a trigger lock or disassembly law as well or do they just have to be secured?

    The only county you can deal with is the one in which you are living or going to reside in

    that is also decided by county, but the license is a permanent license. You have to get every new purchase added to the permit, and if you sell one, you have to take it off. Some county's you take the bill of sale to the county clerk, and it is added on to your permit, then you can go pick up your gun. Other's like the one in which I live(Wayne), it takes up to 2 weeks, as the county judges want to sign every ammendment application. We need consistancy in this accross the state, which we don't have, but in no case, can you leave with the gun, untill you get it added to your permit...unless you are an LEO, purchasing it on your badge.

    no, that is not true. The FFL, who also has to have a NYS dealer's license to deal handguns, fills out a P-12 form, and sends that along with a fired casing provided by the mfg. on new gun's, used guns in the state are grandfathered, to the NYS Police. The dealer, and county clerk do this in otherwords.

    There is not a dissassembly law, but the trigger lock or locking device is a Federal law, that one must be included with every gun.

    Im a FFL in NYS (Delaware County) so I can help.. Answers so far correct except in most counties around us Delaware, Sullivan, Broome etc you need 4 references and Im not sure about the two year residency deal.. Delaware County is one of the few I know of where you can get the pistol purchase coupons ahead of time , walk in theshop with coupon, Permit, drivers license , pass NICS check and walk out door with gun ..

    Are there any websites where someone could run a serial # from a possible "post ban" firearm in order to possibly see what the date of manufacture would be, since one sure doesn't want to violate any illegal regulations and ordinances; or would the person have to check with each manufacturer separately, at least it would be convenient since we have to go to all this very un-Constitutional trouble to begin with?

    How 'bout right here within these hallowed confines? Post the make, model, and SerNo, and someone will get you the info. If not, perhaps then you could pose the question in the paragraph above. We'd still need the make/model to direct you to the best source for your own personal look-see anyway.
