1885 musket forearm question

I see in the actions that there appears to be 2 different types of musket forearms. At the band in the middle sometimes there are springs on either side of the forearm to keep the band in place. Other times the band has a screw through it to keep it in place.
Are there different names for these types of forearms?
Is there a reason for one type over the other or was this a design change at some point?

I am Certainly no expert and I am sure Bert will be along soon. However, this quarters edition of The Winchester Collector talks about the 3 variations of the Winder musket and mentions the spring clips used in the 1st variation.
Incedently the author is a Mr. Bert Hartman. [:)]0 -

Lastly, the spring clips were used exclusively on both the First and Second variation Winder Muskets, and for a very short time on the Third variation. The First variation was the only one of the three that used two (twin) barrel bands. There are actually three styles of the forend (Winder Musket) stocks.0
