Bore Photos

Does anyone have advise on how to take photos showing the bore condition. Thanks

    Know a proctolagest or some such type of doctor? The camera they like to stick you know where will usually fit the bore and record the images.

    Some gunsmiths have recording bore scopes (basically a less expensive version of the above).

    Most any digital camera with a Macro feature will do a pretty decent job if you illuminate the bore first. You might have to use a tripod to keep the image in focus; but it usually works well. I do this for the guns that I sell on GB; a picture is worth a thousand words.

    The standard of tools used for either looking at or recording the condition of the entire barrel interior is the Hawkeye Borescope by Gradient Lens Corp.:

    These have been used by gunsmiths and gun lovers for a couple of decades. You can view the bore using just the standard set up but you can also use video and stills if required for other applications. Be aware that Gradient Lens is not shy about pricing.

    If this is beyond your budget then I suggest a decent digital camera with a 'macro' setting and a stable tripod for steadiness. You will not get detail in the entire bore, just the first couple of inches of either end if the barrel is off the firearm. Many cases this will solve the most generic needs without getting into the high priced interior examination inch by inch. If you need the detail then the choice is the Hawkeye.

    Thank you, I tried the macro lens, but the lighting is a challenge.

    Fiber optic cable is the best solution but somewhat pricey for individuals. There are small flashlights that will fit into the chamber of the barrel to provide light towards the muzzle and can be reversed also. If it's too strong, try taping some tissue paper over the lens of the light.

    Reflecting light into the chamber or muzzle works, too. Angle a piece of white cardboard or paper at the chamber and shine the light at a right angle onto the white surface which is reflected into the barrel.

    Most gun shops sell these little pieces of light conducting pastic rod bent in the shape of a "J" that are used specifically to light up bores. Cheap and no batteries required. The battery powered ones are better, like the one by Remington, they sell for less than $7.Check out GB auction # 160062309 for a pic.
