I messed up Model 94 -- Silver solder

I have a really nice pre 64 Model 94 that Ive been shooting. It was made in 1956 and looks nearly new. I wanted to make it shoot better and decided to change the sights.

The problem is that Whan I went to remove the front sight with a naylon punch the whole front ramp came off. Im really beside myself.

Can any of you tell if it can be reinstalled without messing up the Blueing on the barrel.

    I am pretty sure you can fix it with less than $100 in fees. does that help?

    If the ramp was soldered it will probably discolor the blue when you silver solder it back on. I would try the lower temp hi-force solder from Brownells.

    I think it is time for an experienced person to fix it. Things can go from bad to worse in a moment, and then it might never be the same.

    If it was in poor condition to start with, that would be a totally different thing.

    I agree with Harold, take it to a competent gun smith, it is worth taking good care of good guns.

    It was soldered. From what I can tell Winchester must have started soldering them on about 1950?

    I can tell that it was barely soldered on. There was only a small place on one end that had any noticeable amount

    Well you can clean, flux and pre tin the sight base and barrel individually using lo temp solder. Then clamp in place and heat.
    Keeping the sight properly positioned when the solder melts may be tricky.
    Make your windage adjustments on the rear sight.

    Have any of you replaced the front sight with a screw on type, like Marbles has? maybe that would be a better idea. I do want to shoot it. I just want to take care of it.

    Tough call, here. You (in your first post) want to keep the bluing looking nice. Can't fault that. However..

    The installation of an aftermarket screw-on sight will render the gun, to the trained eye, unauthentic looking. Your call.

    Either way, soldering the original sight to the barrel, or the installation of a non-original sight best be left to the gunsmith.

    To answer your question, yes. You can do it..with the caveat of the first paragraph. Best, Joe

    Winchester started there soldered ramps in 1952. I recently had the same problem with a pre 64 model 70. I used the Brownells hi force 44 solder along with the flux they recommend. Melting point is around 500 degrees. I had no problem using just a turbo torch. Did not need to light up the oxy aceteline rig. I pre tinned the bottom of the ramp and the barrel area and just sweated them together. Worked good.

    Thanks for all the help. I have been asking around locally. I understand that 3 M makes an adhesive to use on cars that holds on body panels. It is supposed to be seriously strong. Do any of you know of this

    Rex If you decide to Brownell's hi force 44 solder be sure and not let the flux get on your blued barrel out side of the area covered by the sight.... It will take the blue off!
