Mauser BYF P38 1942

A neighbor is helping me to determine the value of a gun that belonged to my dad. He recently passed away, and my mom needs money to live on, so we are looking at what we have that we can sell to keep her in her home for a while. It has the leather case (holster?). The serial numbers match. I think that he said the number is 1410D. It only has one clip, but the case has room or an extra. The site is missing. It is in pretty good condition, and a gun dealer told me that he would give me $250 for it, and that it is a 1942 Mauser BYF P38. I know that it is worth more than that, and realize he is looking to make money on it too. Can anyone give me a fair range of what a dealer might offer me for this, or what it might go for retail?

  The missing sight would unfortunately detract from it value to a collector. As a rule of thumb a dealer would offer you no more then 50 cents on the dollar for what he expects to make off it.

  phumswife......as Rufe has said, we need photos to really help you with value. I can tell you right off, however, do not sell it for $250 as the leather holster could be worth that depending on its condition! If you can't do photos go over the pistol and the holster with a mag glass, describing everything you see. For example, on the back of the holster should be P38, a Waffen mark (German eagle with swastika and a #) and a date. Check the pistol's magazine carefully for a mark (might, for example, have a little jvd at the bottom). Even w/o the sight (which can be replaced) the entire set, in good condition, could bring twice what you were offered...and probably more! We can help you further with those photos. Hope this helps.
