S&W model 41
this gun came out in 1957. some magazines list a 7" barrel others a 7 3/8" barrel. did they offer both? i would like to chat with an expert on this model. Just picked up one from this site and im impressed with the quality of the early guns. my serial # is 196XX anyone know the year of manuf? thanx in advance.

Is it really all that? I shot one years ago, and thought it was okay.
I keep hearing about it and it's reputation as being one of he best .22 autos. I have many Ruger MKII's and do great with them. Several have the Volquartsen trigger kits in them.
I see there's plenty of 41's to be had on the auction side. looks as if S&W is even producing new ones.
I've never been a big fan of S&W autos. Love their revolvers though.
Any real advantage to an older 41 over a new one?

I'd call 800-331-0852 and ask about it. Your 41 was made in early 1970. Have never seen one with a external hammar. Some have a cocking indicator on the back. 0 -
The S&W 41 is a striker fired pistol. We need to see some clear, and close up pictures of what you have.

There was a guy back in Cali years ago named Lovelace who altered a bunch of 41's so that they had external hammers. How he did it I don't know? He was more famous as a knife maker so he didn't do gunsmithing full time. The guns he did do, are well known to collectors though. 0 -

Yes, the Model 41 has an external hammer. The slide conceals it, though. If you have a heavily modified 41, with an exposes hammer, then you just may have a Loveless model 41, from a Gun Digest Book of Pistolsmithing, 1980:
Robert W. ("Bob"; "R.W.") Loveless, the famous knifemaker, modified a slew of Model 41s, along with some Govt. Model 1911s. He refered to these modified guns as "field guns". The goal was to make them more functional, and more pleasureable to shoot.

Big: What a great article. I collect and shoot 41's, could not find any of this stuff in my documents. I'll have to goggle Loveless and add that to my info.

Hello Big Loop Thanks I have been shooting Bulls-Eye for many years and have a collection of BULL-EYE guns Never heard must less seen any of these modified model 41's Just like GeeGuy Thanks for your interesting post.

Funny thing I use to see Bob Loveless at the local cali gunshows years back. He never had any of the S & W 41's with him. Although apparently he had made quite a number of them. It always seemed he had a case with his knives though. They were really popular with collectors. Never even knew that he reworked .41's until I ran across articles about them in the gun rags. Might be the same ones the BL posted, it's been so many years now don't hardly remember? 0 -
