The ones I have replaced required new rivets every time. Also the special rivet tools.

If the existing rivet could be drilled and tapped, then I wouldn't need to refinish the receiver. I was just wondering if anyone had fixed it with a small screw instead of replacing the whole rivet.

Used a size/number one drill bit and tap. Drilled a hole all the way through the rivet. Tapped the hole. Placed the spring in place and secured it with a number 1 screw.
The screw head had to be ground down a hair or two so the shells would extract. Works perfectly. Save $40 and didn't need to refinish the receiver.
