Colt-Burgess Octagon Value

Octagon barrel Colt-Burgess advertised in a local trader mag for $2,000 OBRO. Owner says he has had it for ~50 years, describes it as "very good" but needs a firing pin. Says it is a $5,000 - $6,000 gun. I have asked for better photos and may take a look at it this weekend. I never have a good feeling when someone is selling something cheap that he "knows" is worth big bucks. Beyond the obvious aggressive cleaning and sloppy refinish what are the more obscure issues that might make this rifle actually worth $2k (or less)?

    If it's truly NRA antique very good condition $2,000+/- is about right. To get 5 or 6 thousand it would need to probably have at least 50% original blue.

    It is very common to find a crack on the side of the forearm (right side, I think), so look close for damage/repair. Also the Rampant Colt on the side of the frame can be fairly weak and easily lost during a refinish. Be careful with "needs firing pin" as it might need the whole bolt/dust cover assembly (if they came with a dust cover, I can't remember).

    Get hold of a copy of Fladermans Guide which is the basic reference text for collectors of antique U.S. firearms. It has a section on the Colt Burgess, that might help you check out the one your interested in buying.

    You have two prime examples of the Colt Burgess rifles on auction right now near the $6,000.00 mark that you can use for comparison. One has been on auction for a very long time, but the owner knows his guns very well. A $2000.00 Colt Burgess will more than likely have brown finish to some extent, if not a lot.

    This was all that was posted in the ad. Receiver actually seems to have some blue left.

    Not a great photo but you can see the Rampant Colt
    and the blue looks worn in the proper areas. Certainly
    worth a looksee.

    Thanks for the replies. I'll post any decent pics I get on a separate thread and look forward to any opinions. This is uncharted territory for me.

    Got the pics today. Brown, pitted, no visible Rampant Colt, lovely checkering on the forend. Maybe next time [:)]
