Maverick 88 magazine capacity issue
I just bought a Mossberg Maverick 88 security 12ga w/ 20" barrel and magazine tube. I was told, and also read, that the magazine held seven 2-3/4", or six 3" shells.
I can only fit four.
My first thought was a plug or dowel, but I am pretty sure that is not the case.(for starters, I don't know why there would be a plug that allows four shells instead of two)
Unfortunately, I am having difficulty removing the tube, even with tools.
I did check the inside by inserting a cleaning rod, carefully, through the threaded hole for the take down screw. I was able to make my way to the follower, without any obstruction.
I am definitely at a loss...
If the 20" magazine is only made to hold four shells, then why make it 20"?
Is there something I'm missing?
Please advise.

It should hold more than four, you have already checked the dowel rod thing and no problem there. It could be the spring binding up or make sure there are no dents in the mag tube. Also, I wonder if someone might have placed a tube inside to limit shell capacity for some type of local law or such? 0 -

I see what you mean.
Basically, it comes down to taking the tube off, and checking the innards.
Any suggestions on removing a stubborn magazine tube?
The main trouble is, applying a firm enough grip without damaging the tube. I am using fabrics and other types of "cushion", with my various pliers and wrenches, with no success.0 -
Only thing I can think of is maybe take a hair dryer and heat up the reciever area where the tube is screwed in. This might cause enough expansion to help break the tube loose. You might try it while it still hot or wait til it cools down, not sure which would work best. Something else that might work, take a can of compressed air that you use to blown out the computer keyboard, turn it upside down and blow it into the mag tube where it screws into the reciever. Do this while the reciever is hot, the cold liquid might help shrink the tube just a little and make things come loose.

Try a heat gun. Hair dryer may not be hot enough to loosen the thread locker Mossberg uses to hold them in place. Don't remove the thread locking goop and then warm it up again and screw it back in when you are done.

Now just wait a minute befoer dismissing the old dowel rod. A cleaning rod is about o a 1/8 the size of the tube dont you think a free floating dowel that is a 1/4 or less the size is going to find the cleaning rod? Take off the barrel and tip that thing upside down and then determine if it has a dowel or not. It should fall right out. 0 -

I have already tried tipping the gun over in search of a dowel.
Even when I shake it, I don't hear anything moving in the magazine.
I will try applying heat to see if that will help.
I'll let you know how it works out.
