ar15 bolt/feeding failures
I just aquired my first ar15 and am having problems with failure to feed factory ammo of max col. if i reload and keep col under 2.159 then smack the mag !on the front! driving the cartridges forward it functions fine. any ideas?[?]

cowboy i think you are on to something as i had to return the arm to ger the correct hammer. i will check and see if the buffer and spring might be to long. thanks much!
p.s. thanks all for the advice. I checked the length of the buffer and spring, the spring was o.k. but the buffer was .289 inch long! trimmed the delrin? end and now it clears the rims and picks up the factory loads! thanks again.0 -
are you holding the rifle in your off hand at the magwell? If so make sure you're not torquing the mag back and changing the feed angle... just a thought 0 -
What magazines are you using? If they aren't Pmags, CMMG, or USGI they should be considered a suspect. 0 -

shooting off bench and making sure not to rest on or touch the mag in any way. have gone through 5 differant mags and they all work with short cartridge length but not the winchester 55 grain ball.

What brand/model of rifle? 0 -
the lower is a tactical innovations and the upper i'm not sure of.has a 12 inch hand gaurd. i've been wondering if the bolt carrier stop cut is short, keeping the bolt from fully recoiling. again it functions fine with short cartridge over all length. 0 -
Did you make sure the 3 gas rings on the bolt weren't lined up? I know that can cause a problem with feeding because most of the gases are getting exhausted. You might also have some headspacing issues, especially if the barrel was installed without the proper gauge measurement...I dunno, just some ideas... 0 -
As Walther mentioned. Make sure the gas ring gaps are staggered.
Is this rifle new, or used?
Is the upper receiver and bolt carrier clean and properly lubricated? Check the buffer tube and spring as well.
Is there any damage to the end of either the carrier key or gas tube?
Check to be sure the carrier key is tight to the bolt carrier body.
Could there be carbon buildup in the gas tube/carrier key? Carburator cleaner will remove carbon buildup from them. A pipe cleaner will help with cleaning the key. Brownells has the long ones for the gas tube.0 -
thanks guy's for the input. the only thing i've not checked are the gas rings. it just seems weird that when i load max col rounds they fail to pick up. i pull the bolt fully to the rear and look into the breach and the bolt head fails to clear the rear of the round. buffer spring to long? could the bolt carrier be over length? how about the bolt head/locking lug extension being over length? should not have waited 60 years to get one of these. its alot of fun when it works.the rifle is used and the person i got it from used it with a 9mm upper part of the time. i don't mind reloading but want to get it to function with all available fodder.[:D] 0 -
As I understand them, the 9mm uses a different hammer, buffer and buffer spring. Am I correct so far?
Can you contact the fellow you bought it from to see if it has the correct parts installed?

The ring's orientation changes each time the bolt cycles and they inevitably become perfectly lined up anyhow - you just never knew it because the rifle functioned fine.
Demonstrate this for yourself by orienting them however you wish, then simply install and remove the bolt. It's impossible for them to remain aligned the way they were arranged when installed.

Never, never, never insert anything down the gas tube due to both the danger of leaving cleaning equipment debris in there and the possibility of increasing your problem by pushing deposits into a greater blockage.
Instead just stick with using a high pressure, strong solvent that's allowed to flow out into the bore. GunScrubber. non-chlorinated brake cleaner, etc. are handy.0
