5 Screw S&W HE
I have inherited a S&W 5 screw N frame HE in 44 Spl. The serial numbers on the grip frame and in the crane area match, but the number on the cylinder is different. The barrel is four inches long and marked Smith and Wesson but there is no calibre designation. There is no model markings anywhere on the revolver. I'm guessing that this is a parts gun. Can anyone offer any insight? Sorry, no photos available.

The serial number would help establish when it was made. Model numbers were not put on Smith & Wessons until 1957. There were 4 models of .44 hand ejectors made from 1907 to 1966. If it has an "S" prefix to the serial number it was made in 1946 or later.
If it has a serial number on the back of the cylinder thats different from the others, it may be a parts gun. You might also check the bottom of the barrel for the serial number.0
