    The serial number would help establish when it was made. Model numbers were not put on Smith & Wessons until 1957. There were 4 models of .44 hand ejectors made from 1907 to 1966. If it has an "S" prefix to the serial number it was made in 1946 or later.

    If it has a serial number on the back of the cylinder thats different from the others, it may be a parts gun. You might also check the bottom of the barrel for the serial number.
