Colt 45 Pony Express Model
A 91 year old friend of mine has a matched set of these pistols that I think are 2nd generation.They are in a single presentation case with matching serial numbers of 2xxE @ 2xxw (East @ West),2 extra cylinders for each pistol and two Medallions along with some personal letters from a gent named Waddell who is a decendant of one of the owners.My friend has no heirs.If I assist him in trying to sell, and with only one double case I would guess only as a pair,Should the price be less or more than twice the price recommended for a single? Thanks for input or suggested value ballpark figure.

A similar set (Serial #106E) with a pair of .45 caliber and .22 caliber revolvers sold in 2005 for $1,700.

Colt made approximately 1,007 sets in 1961 commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Pony Express. Russell, Majors AND Waddell were the founders of the Pony Express so a letter from Waddell's descendant would certainly enhance the value.
These are the only pics I could find but not double-cased.

Colt offered two Pony Express commemoratives. The .22 Scout
in 1961, and the .45 SA in 1964. Since you state that
these are .45 I would guess you have the 1964 edition.
I have no idea if the 45's were issued in pairs or not.
If this is a special order set and a Colt factory case
I would think a decent premium would be added, even
though the commemorative market is soft. Might be
worth getting a factory letter. Is the case marked
with the Colt logo? Pictures?

I'm not sure which year he has either but the set I pictured is numbered 459E and are marked "1860-61 Russell Majors and Waddell
Pony Express Centennial Model 1960-61". I agree that pictures of his would definitely help.0 -

Colt commemoratives can be confusing because there
are so damn many of them! [V]
I have no idea why Colt would issue a 1964
commemorative of the Pony Express. What happened
with the PE in 1864 to commemorate in 1964?
I'd like to see photos of the set/case.

Thanks for your input. The old guy doesn't have a computer nor a digital camera but I will try and get some pictures to submit.Both of these pistols are 45 cal. Same ser.no. on each except for the E and W following the number.They are 1964( only year for the 45"s) 0 -
