Reversed Chokes on old SxS?
I just picked up an old American Gun Co. (Crescent) hammer double side by side. I had it checked out by a gun smith yesterday and he blessed it as being in great condition to shoot.
The only think odd he found on it was that the chokes were reversed on it. The Left barrel has the marking "Genuine Armory Steel Choked Bore" And there are no other markings on it in regards to choke. The triggers are set up as they normally would (frint to fire right barrel and back for left).
But he measured the barrels and he said that the left is close to a full choke and the right is even tighter. Like a super full or Turkey choke.
Anyone out there ever hear of the chokes being reversed on this type of gun?
I wouldn't think a gun like this to be a special order, since these were just cheap hardware store guns.

It's not uncommon to see chokeds reversed on guns that are (or were) used on "driven game" such as might be encountered in Europe. 0 -

What would be the purpose / advantage to having them reversed? And you say that this is not uncommon on even inexpensive American made guns such as this? 0 -

Different techniques. In the US "walk up" style, you kick the bird in the butt and shoot as it's going away. In the europeian "driven" style, the "serfs" do all the work and drive the birds to the shooter.
Think shooting at decoyed ducks, where the first shot is taken further away than the second VS "jump shooting" ducks where the first shot is closer than the second.0 -
If the front trigger fires the right barrel, it is not reversed. The first barrel to fire was usually the cyinder bore barrel and the rear trigger fires the choked barrel. 0 -
The front trigger does fire the right barrel, but that barrel is choked more than the left.
I understand that you would want it the other way around if shooting a taget coming at you (like described above).0
