old Winchester collector in my area
Hi, I am looking for a honest collector of old lever action Winchesters in my area so I can learn something and maybe purchase some nice old guns. I live in the Clinton, Iowa area and would travel if necessary. Thanks and let me know. Peter

Jump in feet first! Start watching auctions here on Gunbroker. Pick one particular model to study at first. Read descriptions carefully and study pictures. By some quality Winchester books and start reading. Find a couple of good gunshops in the area that you can hang out in and ask questions. Good luck! 0 -

Purchase a book such as the "The Winchester Book" by George Madis. It contains errors, but there probably isn't a firearms reference book written that doesn't have a few errors and omissions. However, it will give you basic information on all prewar Winchester lever actions and after you've read about every model you'll probably develop a preference for the models you want to collect and it will prepare you to ask the right questions when you do find that "Winchester Expert" to talk to. Also, start attending gun shows and match what you are seeing on the tables with what you read in the book, but start with the book!

+1 on the previous comments. Another good Madis book is The Winchester Handbook. It's a very handy guide to most all Winchester makes and models which contains some information that cannot be found in other publications. Also, frequenting any local gun stores on a regular basis might lead to meeting other people who will help you to this end too. 0 -
