World War 2 37mm shell
I have a 37mm shell that is dated 1943 on the driving band and on the butt of the hull. on the driving band these are the numbers as listed: LOT CSA-MPC 4 1943M5B3 37MM Then a big 13. There is also a symbol that looks like a circle with a little circle on top with flames comming from the top. Over all hull, and projectile this thing is probably 18" long. My Grandfather served in World War 2 in the 69th tank batallion Company C. My mother always told me that he brought this thing back from France. I was looking into what this thing would be worth? Yes it is inert. Any help would be helpful! Thanks

Simpson....the 37mm cannon was very popular in the US military in WWII. It served in a variety of roles, including anti-tank and anti-personnel; tank (the small Honey tank which was used both in Europe and Pacific), armored cars, on ships and even on some planes (the Soviets loved the 37mm in the nose of the P-39 for busting German tanks). While it was later outweighed by much larger weapons, at the earlier part of the War it was a main caliber gun on several US armored vechicles. Perhaps that is why your Grandfather brought it back as he might have crewed one of those vechicles that used the weapon. Might be an interesting exercise to find out more about his unit and their weapons. I can tell you that while the round is rather small, our Marines loved it in the Pacific when they used it as a large shotgun to break up Banzai charges of Japanese troops. Little round, big boom!
