ffl buying rifle from canada

I have been told that a FFL in U.S.may import a couple of guns a year.Is this true and what all is involved in doing so?

    You have to contact an importer & discuss your requirements. This is one, there are several others:

    It will not be cheap, & you will not be able to get a firearm that ATF does not consider "importable".

    EDIT: Even with an individual doing the importing, wouldn't any firearm have to go to a bonded warehouse, & be held until customs had been paid & the firearm stamped with an importer mark?

    An FFL dealer (not a collector) may import an "occasional" firearm. Naturally the BATFE does not define just how many firearms are considered "occasional" but you should be safe with two. In this situation you do not need to be registered with the Dept. Of State under the Arms Control Act of 1976, but you still need to file a Form 6 with the BATFE and have it approved before you can proceed with any import. The form is self explanatory and while detailed, there is nothing complicated about the process and when you already have an FFL, approval is generally within 60-90 days. Keep in mind what Neal already said, you cannot import anything that would otherwise be non importable: This includes assault weapons, non sporting pistols and anything made in China. If you are by some chance eyeing those cheap Chinese guns on the Canadian MARSTAR website don't even bother because they are out of reach.

    There is one other thing, (it would make life a lot easier if you just told us what it was that you were planning to import) surplus military firearms which are classified as Curio and Relics may only be imported by a licensed importer. If you are looking at something like an M1 carbine, a Colt Government or a Kar 98 then you are out of luck.

    I don't see a problem, but if you import them on a regular basis for resale then the BATFE is going to insist that you obtain an importers FFL.

    A holder of a C&R may import a non-military C&R with form 6.
