Marlin 336 forend removal and refinish?
I want to take the forend off my Glenfield 30A, same as a Marlin 336, it has the forend cap with a small screw on each side. I figured if I take those two screws out, slide the cap away from the wood, the forend should pop right out. Is there something else holding the forend in? Does the whole magazine tube assembly need to come off to remove the forend?
Whats the best way to strip all the old finish off the stock and forend? Its birch, and I want to leave it natural finish, no stain. How do you get all the old stain out of the checkering?
Thanks for any guidance!

Chris, has been a long time since I did this, but IIRC, removing screws on foerarm cap will allow you to remove cap, and slide forearm towards the muzzle, but will still be held captive by the magazine tube. Tube runs thru the forearm.
Re: Stain, well, the word IS stain. Not paint, It gets into the wood fibers, and colors them. You CAN try using a solvent, soaking, and brushing checkering GENTLY with a soft brush (toothbrush) but don't think you will get it all out. Gunpartscorp DOES have an on line schematic for your rifle that may help a little.0 -
Got the forend off and took all the old finish off the stock and forend. If I want to leave the wood natural finish, what is the best thing to use, a clear, satin polyurethane? 0 -
Would try an oil finish. Formbys makes a bunch of oil finishes that do not darken wood- you can go gloss or satin (me like satin) Look for Tung oil. Does require some hand work (follow directions) but will give a very nice finish. 0 -
Thanks 11b64, will give that a try! 0 -
I've used Permalyn with good results for several years now.
