Yugo Tokarev won't work when safety is installed

As the subject line suggests, the gun will not fire when the safety is installed, but it seems to work fine when I remove it. I recently picked up a M57, cleaned all the cosmo out of it and reassembled it. I took it to the range expecting to blow through a couple boxes of ammo and was barely able to fire off three rounds. Squeeze trigger-nothing. Squeeze, squeeze, squeeze boom! After three shots and a calloused finger, I suspected I had a problem with the trigger group. Luckilly I found another thread suggesting It may work if the safety were filed or debured and sure enough, I took it out and it works! My question is this: Where do I file the safety? It has two flat surfaces. One that faces towards the trigger, and the other faces up.

    Well I just took it to the range and put over 100 rounds through her without one problem. That confirms it. It work only WITHOUT the safety. Anyone ever file or other adjust the aftermarket safety on one of these?

    If you remove the safety and look into the hole, you can see a pin mounted in the trigger's rear that stops against the safety.
    Nibble a little at a time off the pin and stop when you achieve a reliable hammer release.
    I say work on the pin rather than the safety because if you screw it up,
    the pin is easier to replace than the safety.

    Really? I heard taking apart the trigger group is a very difficult thing indeed. Do you have a link that would provide me with replacement instructions in case I did take too much off? I'd prefer to have a spare on hand of whichever piece I decide to "adjust". Also, do you know where these spare parts could be obtained? I've heard of Wolf springs but have not sought out those...yet.

    My Romanian TT-33 also has a distributor-installed safety, which I assume was required by ATFE in order for them to get an import permit. Because of problems with the safety, the distributor (IO Inc) recalled the guns & repaired them. They even paid to have Fedex pick up the gun at my home, & return it.

    Have you contacted the distributor of your Yugo to see if they have a recall program, too?

    I didn't yet ask him to fix it. It sounded like he would exchange it but afetr spending all that time cleaning it, I'd hate to give it up and start over. I'll ask him though if he could make the repair...

    always wondered if original configuration was good enough & garbage was added for a paper reason why wouldn't it work fine without addition

    [img][/img]Here is a pic of the area in question. Do I file away at the lowest point? I still feel I should file the safety as I almost don't need it, and if I screw it up. (shrug) Oh well...

    Take a couple of careful strokes at a time on the rear surface of the pin.
    As the the release works sometimes, very little metal needs to come off.
    If you don't take too much off you will have a nice trigger stop.
    Finding a replacement safety may not be possible if you screw it up but either part can be altered to make the safety work.
    If you aren't comfortable with fine file work let a gunsmith do it.
    The trigger comes out very easily but the magazine catch needs to come out first.

    I got the gun back from the vendor and it works great! It required a little filing and even then it needed a new firing group. It is unlike the Romanian, yet the aftermarket safety is still a problem with these guns it seems. Still, a fun gun now that it works.
