looking for info on savage super sporter

i inherited this old savage and cant find much info on it, some have said it was a mod 40 or 45.

did the slick black stock come with it or was it added, and what do you think the value would be.

it is in 300 savage

    the stock has been painted, this was savages 1st atempt at a 'cheap' bolt action rifle. they worked.

    I have five Savage Super Sporters. Yours is a model 40 and as Mike Whiskey says, your stock has been painted. The model 45 was the "deluxe" model with a little fancier checkered stock, and a receiver sight. There was also an early and a late version of these rifles. Yours is the early version. The late version had a push button on the right side of the stock to release the magazine. The stock had a schnable and the floor plate was dished out to enable you to grasp the magazine. These rifles were available in .30-30, .250-3000, .300 Savage, and .30/06.

    Note that those are not sling swivel studs on there but "eyes" for the hook type swivels that are seldom encountered, anymore. That's a very nice scope mount/rings on there--the scope, however, adds 0 to the value. Assuming the bore on yours is in good shape and taking into account that the metal finish is about gone, I would estimate the value, as is, at $100 to $150 (closer to $100). If it were mine, I'd strip that paint and refinish the stock, maybe replace that scope (unless it's clear and bright and holds zero) and it would be a fine deer rifle.

    There are three of them on the auction side right now. If you look at them all, you'll see the difference between old an new models--one even has the hook type swivels I mentioned.
