C&R Shipping?

I'm planning to ship a Krag rifle made in 1900 to a C&R license holder by UPS. Any snag there that will bite me? Thanks, guys, the laws are so screwy I just need a little help to stay legal.

    It should not be a problem, but you never know what might happen at the customer counter where the clerks don't know their own company policy. If push comes to shove tell them to bring out the tariffs and inside that maze of UPS regulations it will clearly state that you can ship firearms. Be sure to understand that you will probably have to go to the UPS depot since most contract stations refuse to accept firearms of any kind.

    Do yourself a favor sent it through the Post Office by Priority Mail. It will be cheaper and much less of a hassle then using "BROWN". It's legal to ship long guns through the USPS by a non FFL licensee.

    I've shipped and gotten everything from "who cares?" to "we don't do that". They once asked me for a copy of the FFL to verify address, then saw the package addressed "Smith & Wesson" and said "well ya - I guess that's a gun company, OK" But shipping from a UPS service center is usually smooth.

    So I would have a copy of the guy's C & R FFL with me to show the shipper that the address to which it is being shipped and person is a C & R FFL holder. I wouldn't confuse them with the C & R part - just say FFL.

    They'll probably ask if it's unloaded - they get upset if you answer "I think so" - no sense of humor. [:(!]

    But you should be fine.

    Spider- I don't know who told you that. C&R FFL may not MAIL handguns- but rifles and shotguns are fine. For that matter, a private citizen may mail an unloaded rifle or shotgun. DEALERS and MANUFACTURERS may mail handguns- after filling out a Form 1508. Go to USPS.com, search Domestic Mail Manual for the actual reg.

    As far as UPS goes, ship from a hub, or have it picked up. If you go to a hub, print a copy of their website tarrifs on shipping firearms, and take it with you in case you meet the "We don't do that" person.

    And yes- the rifle over 50 years old is covered by the C&R FFL.

    New one on me? Never was aware of that. Kindly reference the P.O. reg, that C & R long guns can't be shipped to C & R licensees.

    I intended to write "C&R handguns", not "firearms" in general. I concur that eligible C&R longarms can be mailed to C&R licensees and I apologize for my brainfart.

    Spider- frequently have days like that meself. Now, just to muddy the water, as an 03 FFL holder, I cannot MAIL a modern handgun- but I CAN receive a C&R handgun from an 01 Dealer. HE is allowed by USPO to mail "in ordinary trade shipment"- and ATF allows him to transfer it to me. But if I did not like it, I can't send it back by mail. Would have to send it UPS or FedEx, or get my local dealer to mail it.

    To make it even muddier, NY State does not allow C&R handguns to be shipped to C&R licensees by any method. They must go to a dealer and then be transferred onto your pistol permit. You can't even send blackpowder handguns directly to residents of NY City, Washington DC and New Jersey [:(!]

    Edit: Neal is correct. A dealer or manufacturer can NOT ship a handgun to a C&R licensee trhough USPS; they must ship it to another dealer or manufacturer.

    No, a C&R handgun may not be mailed to a C&R licensee by an 01 dealer. According to USPS Publication 52, Exhibit 432.1, "Unloaded Handgun - Mailer must be licensed manufacturer or dealer mailing to another licensed manufacturer or dealer." There's no way to twist that around to mean something else.

    The question was about shipping a long gun via UPS so how it ended up dealing with the mailing handguns at the Post Office is any one's guess, but it has nothing to do with the OP.

    I don't think that anyone disagrees that peepsight can ship his Krag using UPS so lets call it good.
