Leman Lancaster PA - Rifle

Alright fellas, I do not know a lot about this gun. I am seeking info on the approximate value and history. Thanks in advance! -Brett

Here's what I know:
It's stamped Leman Lancaster PA - Warranted
Has an octogon barrel, VERY VERY HEAVY. About 4' long.
The name Wm C.Daunt is engraved on it.

    It appears that the wood has been refinished and at least the trigger guard "cleaned, i.e. it doesn't appear to have the normal patina a 150+ year old brass object would be expected to have. I don't know it might be the lighting but this is the impression I get from your photos. If the above is correct it might have a negative affect on the collectors value of the rifle.

    First... I would suggest that you post this gun at <AmericanLongrifles.com>. This is an entirely non-commercial site dedicated to the study of the long rifle.

    As to your rifle and what I can tell from the photos provided, yours is a nice example of a Leman product. The round or oval patchbox is typical of later rifles made by Leman and the full stock was actually cheaper than the halfstock.

    Pennsylvania rifles are valued for their artistry, not for their utility. Leman rifles generally fall into the utility category as they were very good firearms but lacked the artistic components of their finer brethren as a rule.

    Plain Lemans seem to sell for about the same amount as any other utility rifle in similar condition. Lower end guns in reasonable condition will be seen for about $450.00. Fine Lemans with a more traditional and "artsy" patchbox can be had for somewhere in the $1500 neighborhood.

    Understand that these are general figures based on experience and observation. I would personally consider your rifle a nice example of a utility gun. Certainly better than the low end but just as certainly not coming close to the high end either.
