Ruger 10/22 target, accuracy?
I have read up on building 10/22's through the search here. I have looked into the Volquartsen rifles, spendy! My question is how accurate are the 10/22 target models right off the shelf? I am looking for specific group size as to distance fired from anyone who has fired one of these. I would like a .22 that will shoot one inch at 50 yards maximum, and need to know if the target will do that.

Mine will shoot into 0.8" all day long.

mine shoots most any target ammo into an inch and a half at 100yds and some close to an inch - no wind. 0 -
I bought the volquartsen barrel many years ago since a friend reported that it shot well with bulk Federal hollowpoints. Mine is on a Ruger action with a sear/hammer job. It shoots 10 Federal hps into a ragged 3/4" hole at 50 yards. If I sort them by rim thickness, it does better.

Can't speak to the Ruger target model, but its quite possible to shoot under 1" at 50 yards with an aftermarket match barrel and high quality ammo.
For what its worth, Green Mountain barrels have a good reputation for accuracy without busting the bank.0 -
My '60 vintage beavertail will do under an inch at 100 yards, 5 shots, calm day from the bench, with WW Power Points. So would my old target model but it was easier with the heavy barrel. 0 -
I like the 10/22, and really like a built one, but you can get that kind of accuracy out of plenty of factory 22's-you just need to do your part. 0 -
I have the newer hammer forged stainless model with the adjustable Fajen stock (pictured below) and so far my best 10-shot group is 1.17" @ 100 yards with (at the time) $5 per box Wolf Match ammo in the perpetual Oklahoma wind. It actually starts shooting better once the barrel warms up slightly. The gun IIRC, was around $400. I am sure with better ammo it would shoot even more accurate but the reason I shoot the .22lr is to keep costs down and this combo of gun and ammo is a great value.
My standard (lightweight sporter model) 10/22 needed some aftermarket parts to make it acceptably accurate at 100 yards but the hammer-forged heavy barreled target model was good out of the box. Will a $1,200 Volquartsen out shoot it? Probably, but to me it isn't worth double, triple (or more) the price for a very slight accuracy improvement. The same with the ammo, buying better target ammo would likely result in better groups but I would rather shoot twice as often rather than get that last 1/8 or 1/4" better groups.
