Reloading ? - OAL Gauge - Do I need a Ogive
I bought a Hornady OAL gauge and the special cases for my 3 calibers I am reloading (223,30-06,308). In reading this weekend it is suggested that I should buy the following kit so that I can measure the OAL by using the Ogive device that the bullet goes into that attaches to my caliper. Here is what was suggested I should now buy.

and one of these with an extra caliber insert to hold both ends or the case and bullet.

You could buy the PTG comparator and save some $$ and do the same thing. If you are loading for bolt guns these are OK. If loading for semi-autos, you need to set OAL to fit in magazines. 0 -
I have one any use it a lot. You only need the first item. The base of the case rests on the caliper. I find them very handy. 0 -
The OAL gage will give you the distance to the rifling of a loaded round with a particular bullet when it touches on the ogive. Now if you measure that round with a comparator you will have a comparable measurement for bullets of different brands, styles, weights and ogives. Best accuracy is usually achieved when bullets are seated very near the rifling with bolt action guns loaded one at a time. This can cause chamber pressures to rise since the bullet has little or no jump before contacting the rifling. Adjust your powder down slightly. These cartridges are too long to fit magazines so bolt guns or single shot rifles are best for these rounds. 0
