Model 70 Question

Being mostly a REM. kind of guy, I have a question on Winchesters, or any other with similar configurations. What is the purpose of the screw that is forward of the action screws and that screws into the barrel buldge? How should it be torqued? To what? THX HAWKSHAW

    Have a customer with a "post 64" model 70 in 7x57 Mauser. He is questioning which is better or easier to do...rebarrel to 25-06 or 257 Roberts...any suggestions? Advice? Shilen or Douglas barrel? forseeable problems?

    The front screw is the main screw holding the receiver to the stock. The back screw through the trigger guard holds the back of the receiver.These should have equal torque of about 30 foot lbs.The front trigger guard screw takes the least torque and holds the front of the trigger guard with about 10 foot lbs. This should provide the least tension on the receiver with adequate strength to hold the stock.

    DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT, EVER torque those screws to 30 foot lbs, unless you want to buy new ones! Those are only 1/4-20 bolts, and will not take it. 30 inch bounds is possibly the number you are looking for, but I frequently use 50 inch pounds.

    That screw is meand to be for extra support of the recoil lug area of the wooden stocks. It should be torques to about 15-20 INCH pounds.

    Not sure of the original intent, other than to provide extra support to the barrel, similar to what a forward barrel band might offer. We used to just leave them out when freefloating the old WW barrels, or if appearance was a concern, cut off the head and secure it in place with a touch of silver solder on the under side. Anathama to purists, I'm sure, but this was "back in the day".

    TSR Thank you for the correction of foot lbs vs inch lbs on my careless post. Must have been thinking of motor head gasket numbers.
