"storage" felt
Ok...I tried a search on both storage and felt and after reading through a million posts on storage, it seemed like very few of them talked about felt.
I do not have a gun safe, nor the money for a good one anytime soon. However I do want to keep my guns safe from the evil rust. Up until this point I kept my CCW gun on me, or on top of a cotton rag in the nightstand....I daily inspect the gun and clean and oil as needed so im not to concerned about rust for that one.
My other pistol and rifles I was storing in gun cases....after reading all the woes about how the foam can contribute to rust, i have taken this firearms out of the cases.
although i live in a pretty humid state, I keep the humidity in my house down, so i know that if I stored them on the tradtional old "wall mounts" with a good coat of oil, then they should stay pretty well protected....However I know that some felts can also hurt the finish of a gun....
So here is my question/situation...
what kind of felt can I get that will not harm the finish of my firearms?....Can i just go to a fabric store and look for a certain blend of fibers or something?
I did a yahoo search and it seems like 100% wool is the way to go....
any help would be greatly appreciated.

No. You need something that is made for machinist toolboxes. Kennedy sells some, and I am sure you can buy it at other places.0 -
Sorry, I don't buy your excuse. You can get a Stack-On lockable gun cabinet for a little over $100 just about anywhere:

Run a couple of bolts through it into a wall stud, & you have reasonable protection against theft & misuse. Put in a bag of dessicant or a low wattage light bulb, & you also protect your guns against rust.

It's not so much the fabric, but whether or not it will retain or trap moisture.
Even the best cabinet or safe will allow rust to develope in a high humidity environment. What you need is something that will limit the moisture they are exposed to. Even a small closet would suffice if equiped with a Goldenrod or three.0 -

kidthatsirish.......If you can't afford a gunsafe, I would not put them in felt but rather keep them the old fashion way, in racks, gun cabinets, wood racks, or just in closets. The key is what you mention, dealing with the humidity problem. I, too, live in a humid state and your question is an real issue with me as it is with you. The key is to have a good dehumidifyer/heat pump and check your weapons regularly. I got careless one time and turned several fine Tula SKS's into rustbuckets by not paying attention. Keeping them out in the non-humid air rather than enclosed in felt, wool, cases and such, is much better in my view and has worked for me for years....and I live by the beach and the salt air. PS...and I have a 55 gun Liberty safe! Good luck! 0 -
You would think that anyone that built a range box for Bulls-eye type pistols would use a product that was compatible with pistols . I had a well know box made0 by brand "P" the tray for pistols had felt to lock the guns in place a big rain storm came up while shooting at Camp Perry I sprayed the pistols with WD40 and locked them down on the felt and went back to the HUTS 10 minutes walk opened thee range box to pour out the water and any place the wd40 and gun had touched felt it looked like naval jelly had been applied to the pistols I put can of wd40 in the pistol box and threw both in the dumpster Never bough any item with felt or and wd40 from that day I like pebble grain rubber for padding and only use Balistol to protect finish on wood leather and Blued guns. 0 -
